The name Peloponnese in Greek means the "island of Pelops", who in mythology was fed to the gods by Tantalos his father. This peninsula, almost an island but for a 6km wide isthmus bisected by the modern Corinth canal, has some of the most spectacularly varied scenery and monuments on the mainland. Ancient and mediaeval ruins are abundant and provide the focus of sightseeing in the area. To mention just a few. Mycenae , the great Bronze Age citadel; the magnificent ancient theatre of Epidaurus , where the great ancient dramas are still performed each summer contrast with the elegant Nafplion with its neo-classical buildings. the fortified mediaeval cities of Mystras and Monemvasia , and Olympia , home of the Olympic Games. But the whole region is dotted with castles, fortresses and towers left by the Byzantines, Crusaders and Venetians. The countryside itself is as varied as the history, offering a breathtaking range of scenery from Mt. Taygetus , densely clad in black pine and fir, to the Lousios Gorge , the stark, wild scenery of the Mani and the verdant valleys of Eleia.
Accommodation
Atmospheric hotels in some of the most stunningly beautiful areas, we recommend Nafplion, Arcadia and the Mani area. These can be used as a base for touring specific areas of the Peloponnese or a full itinerary for a very rewarding tour of the whole Peninsula.
